Center for Algal Innovations

Algae, both micro- and macroalgae, affect the daily lives of most people, often without our knowledge, through its use in an amazingly diverse array of products, processes and solutions (Figure). The use of algae in these sectors is accelerating creating a significant bioeconomy.

The Bigelow Center for Algal Innovations was established to leverage the scientific and technical expertise within the National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota to develop a Maine-based innovation hub focused on microalgae product development, and grew out of the recommendations in the 2016 Maine Algal Cluster Advisory Group report. The Center for Algal Innovations has three primary focal elements;

  • Scientific research, which includes internal research, corporate sponsored research, and public-private collaborations
  • Technology development, which includes design and fabrication of novel sensors and systems
  • Training and Workforce Development, which includes hands-on short course and workshops at the Center

The Center for Algal Innovations is unique in that it combines a world-renowned microorganism collection, the National Center for Marine Algae and Microbiota, with cutting-edge research and technical guidance across the research-development-commercialization continuum, from discovery, business case development, product design, capital raising, and partnerships to workforce training and IP/patenting support.

Our Mission is to build a resource platform that connects algal researchers and entrepreneurs, accelerating knowledge generation and technology innovation to create a sustainable, ecologically sound and profitable algal value pyramid in Maine, New England, the U.S. and the world.

We look forward to partnering with you.
