Education

The actions of people will shape the future of our ocean – and our planet. We inspire the next generation of ocean leaders through immersive science education. Our hands-on programs provide exciting ways for students to gain new insights through experiences in the lab and in the field.

  • Our Keller BLOOM program offers Maine high-school juniors a unique opportunity to work and learn alongside world-class researchers, while spending a week living on our East Boothbay campus.
  • Our summer internships are part of the prestigious Research Experiences for Undergraduates program by the National Science Foundation, and provide a 10-week, in-depth research experience.
  • Bigelow Laboratory’s Sea Change Semester program is a transformative, 14-week experience that puts cutting-edge tools in undergraduates’ hands and empowers them to answer critical questions about the ocean’s future.
  • Our professional development workshops bring Maine teachers and scientists together to improve ocean science education.
  • Bigelow Laboratory offers a number of professional courses to outside attendees. Courses are limited in number of participants to ensure the best possible experience for students.
  • Our postdoctoral training programs, equip early career scientists with the knowledge, skills, and ethics necessary for successful and impactful careers in ocean sciences.
  • We frequently host masters and PhD students who visit from other institutions to conduct research in collaboration with Bigelow Laboratory scientists. We currently host a cohort of PhD students involved in the Maine NSF EPSCoR eDNA Program.

Bigelow acknowledges that a diversity of individuals and ideas strengthens our work, and we are committed to providing access to our programs to ensure equitable living and learning. Students with a physical disability and/or health conditions requiring accommodations are encouraged to contact our Education Coordinator.
